Pre-purchase inspection

Never buy a card you haven't had inspected.

A used 5090 can hide a lot behind a nice backplate. Here's a sample report from one of our inspectors.
Inspection summary

One (1) RTX 5090, previously owned

Property: GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition, about eighteen months old. Seller describes it as "lightly used, never mined, never overclocked, smoke-free home". Inspector describes it as "a graphics card".

Findings

Room by room

Structural

Foundation

4 mm of sag at the far end of the card. A LEGO brick has been installed as a support column. The brick is structurally sound. Recommend: sag bracket.

Structural

Roof

Backplate intact. Two backplate screws missing. Seller could not say where they went. We think we know.

Plumbing

Thermal paste

Original paste has dried to the consistency of a biscuit. Hotspot 14 C above core temperature under load. Recommend: repaste.

Electrical

12V-2x6 connector

Connector seated about 90%. One pin shows discoloration "of concern". Recommend: push it in all the way, and keep a fire extinguisher nearby.

HVAC

Fans and cooling

Both fans spin. The left one makes a noise the seller described as "character". Bearings are tired but not finished.

Noise

Coil whine

Audible above 300 fps, in menus, and when the room is quiet. Comparable to a mosquito playing the violin. Not a defect, the manufacturer says.

Pests

Dust and cat hair

Moderate dust in the fin stack. Cat hair throughout. No cat was disclosed. One moth, deceased.

Previous owner

Unpermitted modifications

BIOS has been flashed at least once. A sticker reading "DO NOT MINE" has been applied over a second sticker reading "MINING RIG 4".
